Moving on Up...not to the East Side

In 1975, a television show called "The Jeffersons" premiered. A spin off from "All in the Family", the show featured George Jefferson, a man who owned seven dry cleaning stores in NY. His self made wealth gave him significant confidence as he moved his family first from Harlem to Queens, then to the Upper East Side - to a "deeee-lux apartment in the sky". George took a chance on himself and worked hard to become successful. While this move is not on the same level, last month, I moved on from the part time position I have held for the past six and a half years. It was truly bittersweet, as I have been associated with the CT Parent Advocacy Center for well over a decade-first as a workshop facilitator then as a parent consultant. But, I wanted to take the opportunity to follow my passion, my new found passion, and focus on fitness. Over the past several months, I have attempted to do it all and felt I was failing miserably at all of it. So, it was time to decide where I wanted to focus my attention and take a chance on me.

Changing direction is always uncertain, but if we always wait for the "perfect moment", it may never come up. When is that "perfect moment"? How can we be absolutely sure that the decisions that we make - the direction we move in won't be a complete mess?

The answer is simple - we can't. However, we can be certain of our drive and we can be certain of our attitude. If we put everything we have into creating a new situation and it is not successful, we know we tried. But if we never take that leap, we will never know!

My desire to help individuals meet their goals is very strong. There is no greater feeling than when a participant in my class masters an exercise; attempts a new move using heavier weights; jumps in a cardio session rather than just step. The pride in that accomplishment is evident on their face and that fills me with such happiness.

I enjoy seeing a participant become more confident in themselves. They carry their head just a bit higher, are willing to take a chance and perhaps step out to the ledge; maybe change direction! Yes, as I have trained, my confidence has also improved. I carried my head a bit higher and then, became ready to take a chance. Launching this blog a year ago was the first step and now it's time for the next step. So I will continue to study, to train, to train others, to learn different platforms and be the best instructor that I can be. In the process, continue to find new challenges and new directions. Hope to see you in class! Excuse me now as George and I unpack. To be continued...
